Snake Gourd Kootu

Toor Dal ¼ cup
Split Yellow Moong Dal ¼ cup
Snake Gourd 250g
Tomato  2 nos.
Onion 1 no.
Grated coconut 3 tbsp
Cumin seeds 1 tsp
Fenugreek seeds ½ tsp
Mustard seeds ½ tsp
Lemon Juice ½ lemon
Green chillies 3 nos.
Curry Leaves A few
Oil As required
Salt As required





  1. To a vessel add the cut snake gourd, sprinkle some salt on top it and keep aside
  2. To a cooker vessel – wash clean and add the dals together
  3. Add 1.5 cups of water
  4. Now take snake gourd and squeeze it and remove the excess water and add it to the cooker vessel
  5. Cover it and cook for 3 pressure whistles
  6. To a mixer jar add the cumin, coconut, green chillies and grind it to a coarse paste
  7. Now heat a wok in medium heat and add 2 tsp oil
  8. Add the mustard, fenugreek and curry leaves
  9. Once the mustard stars to splutter add the onions
  10. Add a pinch of salt
  11. Sauté the onion until they become soft and brown
  12. Now add the tomatoes, turmeric powder and stir it well
  13. Cook it until the tomatoes come to a mashable consistency
  14. Now add the cooked dals and snake gourd to the vessels
  15. Add the ground coconut paste to the curry
  16. Add the hing and mix it well
  17. Cover and cook in low flame for 15 minutes
  18. Remove and serve hot
